Lasix and the use of Diuretics in Bodybuilding

Lasix is a loop diuretic that is listed by the World Health Organization as an essential medicine. Bodybuilders have used diuretics to flush out excess water mainly prior to competitions. There are three main types of diuretics, potassium sparing, osmotic and loop diuretics.   Osmotic Diuretics are injections that override the kidneys and release anything that passes to the kidney which can cause kidney failure. Potassium sparing Diuretics reduce the reabsorption of sodium and water through the kidneys and flush it out which can cause an excess of vitamin K in the body which can cause irregular heartbeats.

The most common diuretic for bodybuilders is loop diuretics and are used to treat high blood pressure and edema. They literally flush potassium, sodium and calcium from the body with whatever fluid the body has. Side effects of this include a drop in blood pressure, thickening of the blood, renal failure, cramping, fainting or worse.

Lasix works by blocking the absorption of the sodium, chloride and water form the filtered fluid in the kidney causing diuresis (urine). Pill form of Lasix will start to work in an hour but will last for up to 8 hours in the body.

Lasix is used before competitions by bodybuilders but there are powerful side effects such as: Dizziness, headache, dry mouth, low blood pressure, seizures, cramps, Pancreatitis, vomiting, nausea, anemia, dermatitis, high blood sugar, fever, and more. The misuse of Lasix and diuretics have taken the lives of many bodybuilders and should be used with extreme caution and only under medical care. Lasix has also been banned by World Anti Doping Agency due to it’s use as a masking agent.
